The Buddha Taught The Elder Different Karmas Sutra Translation Summary: According to the Buddha: “There are ten types of karma that will cause the sentient beings to have short life as retribution. First, personally kill the sentient beings (including animals, insects). Second,
persuade others to kill. Third, praise killing. Fourth, rejoice in others’
killing. Fifth, desire to destroy those sentient beings (insects) and their (living) places that one loathes. Sixth, rejoice when one's foe perishes. The Buddha Defines Upasaka's Five Precepts Sutra Translation Summary: According to the Buddha: “If one does an abortion with the intention to kill the foetus (be it oneself 's pregnancy or others’ pregnancy); if the foetus dies, then one will commit a grave sin that cannot be atoned by repentance. If the foetus does not die despite one’s abortion attempt, then it is a medium sin that can be atoned by repentance. If the pregnant mother dies instead due to such abortion, then it is also a medium sin that can be atoned by repentance. But if both mother and foetus die as a result, then such abortion is a grave sin that cannot be atoned by repentance. All these are known as killing by abortion dharma.”
The Buddha Declares Retribution for Sins and Merits Sutra Translation Summary: According to the Buddha: “When as humans, their lives are very short; as foetus who died during miscarriage/abortion or as babies who died soon after they were born. (Upon their premature death as humans) They will then plunge into the three wretched realms (animals, hungry ghosts, hell) for thousands or millions of kalpas. Such people, in their past lives as humans, like to hunt or shoot (animals/birds); or like to burn mountain’s forest; or like to break eggs in nests; or like to cast fishing nets. Those who kill all types of animals or sentient beings due to greed for their skin/fur or greed for their flesh to be eaten by themselves; usually suffer short-life retribution (as humans, then fall into the three wretched realms) life after life for a great number of kalpas, without any release date. Caution! Caution! Such pain is beyond words! Samyuktagama-sutra (miscellaneous discourses) Translation Summary: According to the Buddha: After seeing at the road a huge skinless-body sentient being (ghost)
that looks like a huge lump of flesh, the Buddha told all bhiksus: “This sentient being in her past life here in Rajagrha had aborted her
foetus herself. As a consequence of her self-abortion sin, she had
fallen into the Hell and had undergone unlimited sufferings for hundreds or
thousands of years. By having such (ghost) body now, her suffering
continues, caused by the remainder of her (self-abortion) sin. All bhiksus, just as what Maha-Maudgalyayana (Maha-Moggallāna) had seen, it is true and the same. You should accept and uphold this teaching. The Buddha Expounds Miscellaneous Canon SutraTranslation Summary: A ghost asked Maudgalyayana (Moggallāna): “My body is always like a lump of flesh, no arms, no legs, no eyes, no ears and no nose etc. Birds and insects are always eating my flesh; such suffering is unbearable. What sin causes this condition? ” Maudgalyayana replied: “In your past life, you had often provided medicine to (many) people to abort their foetus. This is just the initial outcome or ‘flower-retribution’ of your sin (inducing others’ abortion). Your subsequent Hell’s suffering will be your ‘real-fruit retribution’.”
Selected 100 Karmas Compilation Sutra Hungry Ghost Eats Her 500 Babies -- Cause and Condition Translation Summary: According to the Buddha: “During the Bhadra-kalpa, the present kalpa period; there
was an extremely rich Elder. But his only wife remained childless, despite
their prayers and worship to the deities, begging to have a son. Hence, that
Elder married another woman who was from a big (Brahmin) family and not long
after, she was pregnant. His first wife became jealous of his second wife’s
pregnancy and secretly administered poison to induce her abortion. His second
wife’s sisters and relatives then came to her home; together they accused, denounced
and beat up the first wife. They demanded to know the truth. His first wife initially
intended to reveal the truth, but was afraid of being put to death. Choosing
not to tell the truth, she was painfully speechless and distressed. But when
forced to a corner, she hastily swore this curse: ‘If I had really aborted
her foetus, upon my death, let me reborn among the hungry ghosts, give birth to
five hundreds babies every day and night; eat all my children upon their
birth and yet I will not be full.’ After she had sworn (this self-curse), they released her. At that time, due to jealousy in her heart, the first wife had aborted another’s child; then lied, swore and even cursed
herself. She had thus plunged among the hungry ghosts and is still feeling her retribution
now." At that time, all bhiksus had heard the Buddha’s words (warning) that a jealous mind not only has many faults and pitfalls leading to hardships; but will also cause the sentient beings to plunge into the evil realms. |
